Equality Ever Gain Any Ground

Decades pass after the police beating of Rodney
King — followed by riots in cities and schools, to
Police unloading 16 shots on Laquan McDonald,
To George Floyd’s murder, cementing the “Black
Lives Matter” movement. This reporter looks back —
Does true racial equality ever gain any ground.
Then Memorial Day approaches — lucky us, for our
White House leaders have told the DOJ to dismiss
Consent decrees and close investigations into police
Misconduct, including George Floyd in Minneapolis,
As well as Phoenix, Trenton, Memphis, Mount Vernon,
Oklahoma City, and even Louisiana. So... Lucky us.
—
Lucky us indeed, that our police no longer have to
Worry about sixteen shots it took to take down the
Seventeen-year-old Laquan McDonald Chicagoan.
Because... they’ve learned their lesson. They’re no
Longer racists, and no longer killers of the “other”.
I now get this warm, gushy feeling deep in the pit of
My stomach to see how well we’re taken care of—
We don’t have to worry about these pesky racial
Issues anymore. I know many states have enacted
new laws regarding police accountability — and
Some states have state-level databases cataloging
Officer misconduct records. And really, state-wide
Is all we need, because who needs to understand
Nationally where any pesky misconduct might be.
Because, as I said, our Big Brother Government
Made it clear — we don’t have to worry anymore.
Near the anniversary of George Floyd’s death, and
Memorial Day right around the corner, feel relieved.
We don’t have to talk about a problem if our
Government tells us there is no problem. Like a
Good little lemming, I always do what I’m told —
I try not to look at my friends who are beaten after
Rodney King riots, and I turn off the boob tube
(That is now as flat as my brain) to any protests.
—
It might cost more to pay for the little things (like
Groceries, if the shelves are stocked), but maybe we
should get ourselves a little something. Treat ourselves
In this Brave New World. Things may seem tough,
But trust me, our heads are still above water, and
We keep being told that everything will be just fine.
